For over a century Chiropractors have been helping people get and stay well. This week on Sept 18th, we celebrate 124 years of chiropractic.
Traditionally, chiropractic celebrates it's "birthday" on Sept 18; this is the date in 1895 on which Daniel David (DD) Palmer is said to have performed the first chiropractic adjustment on Harvey Lillard, an African-American janitor working in his building in Davenport, Iowa.
In his 1910 writings, DD Palmer describes the incident:
" On Sept 18, 1895, Harvey Lillard called upon me. He was so deaf for seventeen years that he could not hear the noises on the street. Mr. Lillard informed me that he was in a cramped position and felt something give in his back. I replaced the displaced 4th dorsal vertebrae by one move, which restored his hearing fully."
Harvery Lillard himself gave testimony of the expereince:
" I was deaf 17 years and I expected to always remain so for I had doctored a great deal without any benefit. I had long ago made up my mind to not take any more ear treatments, for it did me no good.
Dr. Palmer told me that my deafness came from an injury in my spine. This was new to me; but it is a fact that my back was injured at the time I went deaf. Dr. Palmer treated me on the spine; in two treatments I could hear quite well. That was 8 months ago and my hearing remains good."
The wisdom that started back in the early 1900s, science is now backing up, providing to be true.
When I talk about how Chiropractic is not just designed for neck pain, back pain or headaches, I always end up with a puzzled look. When Chiropractic started, it was not helping an individual who was in pain. Actually, most people who went to a chiropractor back then, were not going for pain issues. They were going for quality of life issues. What DD Palmer used to share was how he helped people stop using wheelchairs, canes, walkers, etc., through Chiropractic care.
Chiropractic is a profession that does not treat any conditions, illnesses, diseases or symptoms. The reason why Harvey had his hearing return back was because D.D. provided a Chiropractic adjustment that helped restore the function of his nervous system. From there, the body was able to restore itself back to its original state that it is designed to be. And from there, this is how the body restores itself and heals itself. You see, your body is designed to heal, organize and regulate itself. It is build within your DNA. The role of any doctor is to find what is blocking this healing potential, remove the blockage and let the healing process be facilitated again to do what it is designed to do.
An analogy would be having a kink in a hose. When the kink exists, there is less water flowing to all the plants. In the beginning of that process, it is not going to kill the plants but, what is happening, is they are not getting 100% of the water that is needed. Overtime, the plants will start to wilt and slowly age faster than normal. Once you remove the kink in the hose, those plants will slowly return back to life if it has not gone past the point of no return. Your nervous system is this hose and the water is the life it gives to every cell, tissue and organ in your body. Thankfully, this process takes a very long time to get to the wilting point but the issue in our society today is, we wait until we are at the wilting state to react to care, rather than make sure we don’t have any kinks in the first place. A Chiropractor will remove those kinks, which will result in over time, an improved quality of life, health, peak performance, improved energy/sleep, and a better version of you every single adjustment.
